Chapter 1A1

Hej, mormor

Hello, Grandma

Before you read
en and et

Danish nouns are either en words or et words, and there is no rule, you just learn each one: en café, en kop, en dør, but et bord, et billede, et køkken. Learn the article together with the noun from the very start.

er: one little verb for everyone

Danish does not change its verbs for jeg, du, hun the way English changes I am, you are, she is. Danish just says er every time: jeg er, du er, hun er. One word, every person.

ikke goes right after the verb

To say not in Danish, put ikke directly after the verb: Døren er ikke åben (The door is not open). English says is not; Danish says er ikke, same order, easy to copy.

der er and det

Der er means there is or there are, for something new in the room: Der er en dør. det means it or that, pointing at something you already know is there: Det er mormor. Two small words, two different jobs.
