Topics with は

は marks the topic, the thing the sentence is about. 喫茶店は小さいです means as for the kissaten, it is small. Almost every sentence in this chapter starts with a topic and は.

います and あります

Japanese uses two different words for exists depending on what is being talked about. います is for people and animals, like 美咲は台所にいます (Misaki is in the kitchen). あります is for things, like パンは台所にあります (The bread is in the kitchen).

Asking and quoting: か and と

Add か to the end of a sentence to make it a polite question, like おいしいですか (Is it delicious?). The particle と marks the exact words someone says, right before 言います (says) or 聞きます (asks).
