Jestem, jest, są
Jestem means I am, jest means is, and są means are. Polish often leaves out a subject pronoun because the form already carries useful information.
Nouns change shape
Babcia becomes babciu when Julia speaks directly to her, and kawiarni appears after w. Treat these first forms as complete, useful phrases.
Gender in descriptions
Kawiarnia and kawa use feminine forms such as mała, stara, and dobra. Chleb and klucz use masculine forms such as dobry and stary.
