Before you read
Thai is normally written with no spaces at all between words. Storyglot still splits each sentence into separate tappable tokens so you can look up every word, but the sentence itself, like real Thai, has no gaps.
เป็น introduces what something IS, right before a noun: ร้านเป็นของยาย, the shop is grandmother's. อยู่ says WHERE something is, often with ที่ (at): มะลิอยู่ที่ร้าน, Mali is at the shop. Keep them apart: เป็น before a noun, อยู่ before a place.
Thai attributes speech right inside the sentence, the way a real book does: มะลิพูดว่า means Mali says that. Whatever comes right after ว่า is the actual words spoken. You will meet พูด and ว่า again and again.
Thai often uses a warm family word instead of a plain pronoun. A young woman calls herself หนู when speaking to an elder; the elder is addressed as ป้า (aunt) or, in later chapters, ลุง (uncle). Mali calls herself หนู; Aunt Da is simply ป้า to everyone at the shop.
