Chapter 1A1

Καλημέρα, γιαγιά

Hello, Grandma

Before you read
Articles and gender: ο, η, το

Every Greek noun has a gender: masculine (ο καφές), feminine (η πόρτα), or neuter (το ψωμί). The article changes with the noun, and adjectives change too: μικρός, μικρή, μικρό all mean small.

είναι: one word for is and are

είναι covers both is and are, so Το καφέ είναι μικρό (the café is small) never changes for singular or plural. είμαι is the separate I am form, used when Eleni speaks about herself: Είμαι η Ελένη.

υπάρχει: there is

υπάρχει means there is or there are: Υπάρχει μια πόρτα εδώ, there is a door here. It points out that something exists in a place, rather than describing it.

της: of the, showing who something belongs to

Greek shows possession with the genitive article της plus a name or noun: το καφέ της γιαγιάς, grandmother's café. No separate word for of is needed.
